White Sands National Monument

Posted by Rich (Tucson, United States) on 2 May 2009 in Landscape & Rural.

My friend, photographer/writer Bert Gildart, walks over the white gypsum sands toward the remains of a tree. The tree and the dune it grew in are both long gone, but the roots still hold the sand in a heap.

I used a polarizer and a warm filter experimentally here, which is why the sand appears off-white. Even with those to dim the light, the exposure was 1/400th at f/10 (ISO 200) under the dazzling sun. February 2006.

I'm reminded, looking at this picture, of us trying to sled down the dunes here. Not as easy as it sounds!
